Clareborne since 2012
Ann Hutchinson holds a B.A. in Child Development from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.Ed. in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan, where she focused on literacy acquisition in multilingual learners. Before joining Clareborne, she taught for six years in the Detroit Public Schools system and for two years at the International School of Amsterdam. She is the creator of Clareborne’s Grade 4 Author’s Chair program, in which students develop, revise, and publicly present an original written work to an audience of peers, faculty, and parents. The program has become one of the most anticipated events in the Lower School calendar.
“Children know when they are being taken seriously. The moment you give a nine-year-old a real audience for real writing — not a worksheet, not a rubric exercise, but something they actually made — they understand what school is for.”
